“Birds of Prey” doesn’t have a decent bad guy, with McGregor playing his part for laughs, and Messina is the least threatening actor in Hollywood (it doesn’t help that the writing does nothing with Victor). Casting woes extend to Basco, who’s a complete blank in the critical role of Cassandra, bringing nothing to the part. There’s potential in the screenplay’s examples of male ego, with the Joker and others taking credit for the work of women, but it’s not developed with any depth, pushed aside for a finale that piles on the fights in a carnival setting, hoping to leave the audience charged up instead of challenged in a unique way, offered a different perspective when it comes the work of men in comic book and professional settings. Yan keeps the movie brightly lit, impish, and, at times, wacky (Quinn has a hyena named Bruce for a pet), but she never seems in control of “Birds of Prey,” which rarely offers a singular creative vision, often coming across as a crudely stitched together collection of studio-approved scenes. Quinn’s inherent chaos is turned into bubblegum, and the flavor runs out quickly.
